as i’ve mentioned here before (and i’m sure you’ve gathered from various postings) i’m a watch whore. i own fourteen of them, and if i had the means, i’d own fourteen hundred of them. i have summer ones, and winter ones, and fancy ones, and play ones, and i’m constantly on the hunt for new additions to my collection.
while my very first watch was, if memory serves me correctly, a mickey mouse one with a red leather strap, i really remember getting into them with the swatch craze of the late 80’s. i owned two of those giant POP swatches, and adored them. i used to wear them together, taking up just about half my arm (was that only a brooklyn fad? my peers never seem to remember that trend. perhaps it was just a christina-thing.), and along with my neon slouch socks and hairsprayed bangs i thought i was just about the coolest thing to walk down 86th street.
i’ve collected a number of swatches since - a green one in junior high, a magenta plastic one in 2003, my so-beloved-the-band-is-coming-apart favorite “every day” wraparound black one. and while today i have a few other brands that i more frequently purchase, i’ll always have a special place in my heart for swatch, for opening my eyes to the excitement to be had on my left wrist.
a nice little retrospective for mr. swatch via fashionista.
